For January 2017
News on the Center, Faculties, Students, Opportunities, and
Dr. Yilu Liu has been inducted into the National
Academy of Inventors (NAI). Dr. Liu is Dr. Liu is the Governor’s
Chair Professor of ORNL/UTK and Deputy Director for CURENT. The
NAI recognized Dr. Liu for her "spirit of innovation" and for
the impact of her work on everyday life. On April 6, 2017, Dr.
Liu and the other NAI inductees will be recognized at the
academy's annual conference in Boston, MA.
Smart Grid Workshop on Smart Grids Big
A Smart Grid Workshop will be held at Texas A&M University in
College Station, TX, on April 18th, 2017. The theme of the
workshop will be “Smart Grids Big Data: The Next Steps”. It is
open to faculty, graduate students and industry members of
CURENT. If you would like to attend the workshop, please

Recent CURENT Alumni in Career
Recent graduates from CURENT have achieved outstanding career
opportunities. Derek Kou has accepted a position at
Dominion Virginia Power in Richmond, VA as a senior system
protection engineer. Hesen Liu also accepted a position as
Engineer III with Dominion Virginia Power in Richmond, VA. Dao
Zhou is joining Amazon in Seattle, WA as a software development
engineer. Jason Guo has accepted a
position at Google.
Mr. Ken Lowery will give a presentation titled "Startup
- Building and Growing a Technology Company Focused on Value
Delivery and Equity in Relationships" in the CURENT SLC
seminar on February 10.
In the seminar he is going to discuss about different aspects to
be a successful
Mr. Ken Lowery is a Sr. Partner, principal and founding
member of Cadre5 in Knoxville, TN.
Dr. Leon Tolbert gave a presentation on "Writing an Effective
IEEE Paper" in the CURENT SLC seminar on January 20. Useful
information on content, writing style, figures, formatting,
proofreading, and references for IEEE conferences and
transactions papers are presented.
Brent Shumaker, Senior Systems Engineer at AMS Corporation, gave
a presentation on "Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Their Role
in Future Power Generation" at CURENT Industry Seminar on

Candidate, gave a presentation on "Online Condition Monitoring
of Silicon Carbide Devices Using Intelligent Gate Drive for
Converter Performance Improvement " and Ling Jiang, Power
Electronics PhD Candidate, gave presentation on "GaN based
100W-Two stage transmitter with constant current source
CURENT LinkedIn Profile Pic Photoshoot
The SLC has organized a LinkedIn profile picture photoshoot at
MK 533 for all CURENT members from 11am-1pm starting February 9
and conclude on February 11. The pictures can be used in your
LinkedIn, google scholar, webpage, other social media accounts,
and for future CURENT publications. Sign up is required to
reserve a time slot for photoshoot. The sign up link is given
Upcoming Outreach Events
There will be an engineering night at Vine Middle School on
Thursday, February 9th from 6-7:30pm. Volunteers are required for the outreach event to help with
different activities and motivate middle school students towards the engineering
SLC is hosted a cultural event featuring Chinese New Year on
January 26. Faculties, staffs, and students joined the event.
The event started with brief presentation on the tradition of
Chinese New Year celebration and followed by dinner.
CURENT is a National Science Foundation and Department of Energy Engineering Research Center headquartered at UT. Partner institutions are Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Tuskegee University.
