Title: Household energy consumption prediction by feature selection of lifestyle data

Abstract: In this seminar, Dr. Taketa will discuss the general aspects of sparse optimization and show the application of a prediction model for the annual power consumption of general households based on a large-scale questionnaire about the lifestyle of the household. By combining a feature selection technique with the multivariate linear regression model, we can find important features, i.e., key questions, for estimating seasonal electricity consumption for ordinary households. Through numerical experiments, we can confirm high prediction performance of our method by comparing with a naive approach. Lastly, an efficient algorithm for solving nonconvex sparse optimization problems is presented.

Bio: Akiko Takeda received her B.E. and M.E. degrees in administration engineering from Keio University in Yokohama, Japan, in 1996 and 1998, respectively, and the Dr.Sc. degree in information science from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo, Japan, in 2001. She is currently a Professor with the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Statistical Inference at The Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Tokyo. Her current research interests include solution methods for decision making problems under uncertainty and nonconvex optimization problems, which appear in financial engineering, machine learning and energy systems.
