Title: EV-Grid Integration: Challenges and Recent Solutions

Abstract: Electric vehicles (EVs) are transforming the modern transportation and energy systems. Their mass adoption is finally becoming a reality. Tesla Model 3 will cost $35k with more than 400k global pre-orders already aligned. With decreasing prices, EVs will become competitive and ramp up sales beginning in 2025. However, charging infrastructure will continue to be an issue capping growth in the U.S. market. EVs need much more charging stations (residential, public, and dc fast) than there are available today. Furthermore, building and financing the stations are not the only problem in front of mass adoption of the EV technology. The big issue is how the millions of vehicles will be integrated to the conventional utility grid operation. As an example, adding a new EV in a neighborhood of 10 houses supplied by a 50~kVA transformer is comparable to adding a new house within the same network. As the number of EVs under the same distribution transformer increase, the impact on the electric service quality will be disastrous. This presentation will cover the efforts of Flexible Integration Laboratory for Distributed Energy Systems (FIELD) [mck.people.ua.edu] at University of Alabama on how to solve EV-grid integration (EVGI) problem in the cases of (a) DC fast charging station operation, modeling, and analysis [a research project funded by NREL], and (b) EV integration modeling and control in residential distribution grid. Both of the topics are heavily investigated at FIELD currently. The presentation will also include the introduction of the laboratory equipment that are being developed at FIELD to address how to accurately analyze the EVGI problem.
