Dr. Tianzhen Hong Gives SLC Seminar on Friday, February 9th

Dr. Tianzhen Hong will present the SLC Seminar on Friday, February 9th. Dr. Tianzhen Hong is Staff Scientist and Deputy Head of the Building Technology Department of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, his talk is titled "Scaling up building energy efficiency: Connecting smart cities and communities."

What: SLC Seminar with Dr. Tianzhen Hong

Time: Friday, February 9th, 12:20 PM - 1:10 PM EST

Location: Min H. Kao Building, Room 622

This meeting will be available through ZOOM for faculty, partner school students and industry. ZOOM info follows the speaker info.

Abstract: Buildings in U.S. cities consume up to 70% of primary energy. Reducing energy use in buildings becomes a key strategy for cities to achieve their energy and environmental goals. This talk will introduce on-going urban systems research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, including: (1) Integration of city's building stock and energy use data into standardized 3D city models, (2) using machine learning methods to reveal energy use patterns in buildings, (3) using exascale computing to identify, evaluate and prioritize citywide building energy retrofits, and (4) advanced district energy systems for smart cities and communities. A case study will be provided

Bio: Dr. Tianzhen Hong is a Staff Scientist and Deputy Head of the Building Technology Department of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research focuses on data, analytics, modeling/simulation, and policy for design and operation of low energy buildings and sustainable urban systems. He co-leads an exascale computing project, multi-scale coupled urban systems, and a model predictive control project under the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center on Building Energy Efficiency. He is an Operating Agent of the IEA EBC Annex 66 on occupant behavior in buildings, an International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA) Fellow, and an editor of Energy and Buildings journal. He received B.S. in Engineering and Ph.D. from Tsinghua University, China.
