CURENT students took a field trip during spring break. On March 17th, 25 CURENT students visited Electrical Power Board (EPB) and Grid Protection Alliance (GPA), both of which are CURENT industry members. In EPB, Jim Glass introduced the smart grid they are working on. In GPA, Fred Elmendorf gave a presentation on the software products of GPA and their applications on power system monitoring and management. This is the 3rd field trip held by CURENT SLC, followed by the trip to Bull Run Fossil Plant and TVA Chattanooga.


Faculty and Students from Waseda University Visit CURENT

Faculties and students from Waseda University Japan came and visited CURENT during Feb. 21st to 26th. Prof. Hideo Ishii led the visiting group of 11 members. Discussion has been held between the visiting group and CURENT faculties and students representatives. Prof. Hideo Ishii and his students also gave a presentation in the CURENT SLC seminar.

ORNL and CURENT Team Demonstrate CVSR Technology at ARPA-E Summit

During February 29 – March 2, 2016, Research staff Drs. Aleksandar Dimitrovski and Zhi Li from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and research associates Drs. Jingxin Wang and Sheng Zheng from CURENT traveled to National Harbor, MD for the 7th annual ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit. They showcased the Continuously Variable Series Reactor (CVSR) technology sponsored by ARPA-E. Read more.

CURENT to Host Women in Leadership Panel this Week

CURENT is hosting a college-level seminar/panel titled "Women in Leadership" on April 1, 2016. Jacinda Woodward, senior vice president at TVA; Kim Greene, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Southern Company, and Jennifer Cistola, senior vice president at CableLabs, will visit CURENT to meet with students from all engineering disciplines. Women in Power

There is no seminar at the regular time on Friday, April 1st, but we will have a panel discussion about the challenges of the engineering profession with three of its most successful women. Don't forget to join the Women Engineers in Leadership held by CURENT on April 1st, 1:30 - 2:30 pm EST at Min H. Kao 622 or online.

TI: System Engineer - Power

Texas Instruments (TI) is seeking for a system engineer position who will develop new product definition for Power Roadmap including linear voltage regulators, peripheral load drivers and voltage reference. The engineer will also need to visit customer to understand the trend and solve customer problems with new innovative definitions. Find details.

NEC: Research Assistant Internship

The Energy Management Department NEC Labs (Energy Management Dept.) invites applications for a summer internship in resilient power systems. The internship project includes design and implementation of Resilient Microgrid Energy Management systems (EMS). The microgrid consists of renewable and distributed generation resources, energy storage units, and electric loads with or without connection to power grid. The EMS is responsible for control, dispatch and coordination of devices in the microgrid. For details and formally application, please search here.

March Madness Bracket Competition is Continuing

SLC is holding the March madness Bracket Competition. Several students, both graduate and undergraduate, have already made their choice online. On April 4th, SLC will have a social event. People can join to watch the final game of NCAA Men's Basketball Championship in Min H. Kao 124, and the winner of the bracket will be announced. Food such as wings and icecream will be served. Please sign to join.

Nominate People for SLC of the next year

CURENT SLC will have its election for next year's executive board. It will be made up of undergraduate and graduate students. Membership to the SLC can also have flexible time commitments and can be very rewarding. Please nominate or sign-up here.

SLC Held Coffee Break

SLC held a coffee break at the balcony of Min H. Kao building on Mar. 10th. Totally 40 students, faculties, and staffs joined the event. Participants enjoyed the cookies and coffee, and made conversations in different groups. This is the second time SLC held a coffee break. Last one was held on May 2015, and lots of participants enjoyed the event.

Call for Volunteers for CURENT Student Retreat

A CURENT student retreat is to be held in late July or Early August. This is an event to bring Tuskegee, NEU, RPI, and UTK together to do fun activities and get to know each other better. Volunteers will gain great experience in planning, leadership, and money management. Please sign as the volunteer.

Summer Program Mentors Needed

Summer mentors are needed to several programs, including:

  • REU Mentors (undergrads) – 8 weeks
  • YSP Mentors (high school) – 4 weeks
  • Girls Camp Councilors (middle school) – 1 week
  • 4-H Electricity Camp Activity – 2 days

If you are interested in contributing effort to the program and gaining mentor experience, please discuss with Erin Wills in February.
