Title:
An Agent-Based Approach to Study the Diffusion Rate and the Effect of Policies on Joint Placement of Photovoltaic Panels and Green Roof under Climate Change Uncertainty

Abstract:
As two of the highest trending green technologies, photovoltaic panels and green roofs are proven to be effective as energy generation and energy saving practices. The achievable outcomes from the widespread installation of such technologies, however, can drastically change mainly due to the stochastic output of these green practices as a result of uncertain environment and climate factors, as well as the inherent uncertainty in the adoption rate due to different characteristics of the decision makers and interactions among them. In this research, we aim to investigate the diffusion rate of photovoltaic panels and green roofs under uncertainties due to climate change and characteristics of adopters as well as interactions throughout a society. We develop an integrated framework that allows the interplay between stochastic programming optimization models and agent-based models to account for both financial and attitudinal aspects and uncertainties due to both stochastic nature of system parameters and interactions among agents involving human beings. Specifically, we first develop a mathematical model to obtain the optimal green roof and/or photovoltaic panel installation settings for a building. Next, we develop an agent-based framework to factor in the role of human behavior and interaction. We perform a case study over the city of Knoxville, TN, and evaluate the effects of different policies on the diffusion rate of such sustainable energy solutions.
