Young Scholar Student to Enroll at UT

February 2nd, 2012

Simpson-Hannah.pngHannah Simpson knew she wanted to study engineering from an early age. The West High School senior comes from a family of University of Tennessee alumni, so naturally, she jumped at the opportunity to become a Young Scholar in CURENT’s Engineering Research Center.

“This experience has given me a better understanding of what to expect in college,” says Simpson, who is also a recipient of the prestigious Volunteer Scholarship.

Simpson, whose father is a UT Professor and Assistant Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education (CIRE), will be enrolling at UT, Knoxville this fall, and plans to major in materials science and engineering. She credits her experience with CURENT for giving her a solid starting point in higher education.

“It’s made me more interested in engineering and prepared me for more research.”

The Young Scholars Program (YSP) in CURENT offers high school students like Hannah the opportunity to do research with graduate students and faculty, and to expand their knowledge about research methods and electrical engineering concepts. CURENT-Logo_Transparent-tiny.png
