Location: Min H. Kao Building, Room 404

Title: The Challenges of Racial Integration in the Academic Workplace

Abstract: Racially diverse workplaces are more productive and innovative. At research universities, scholars who work in diverse work teams publish more papers in higher impact journals and receive more research funding. However, the focus on outcomes ignores the challenges faced by faculty of color as they navigate work environments that are primarily white. In this talk, I will discuss diversity challenges with particular attention paid to issues surrounding Asian and Asian-American university researchers.

Bio: Dr. Stephanie Bohon is Professor, Associate Head, and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Sociology. She is also a Leadership and Governance Fellow with the Howard H. Baker Center for Public Policy. Her work focuses on developing statistical models of race in the labor market, and she is the author of several books and myriad articles on this topic. She holds degrees in economics, political science, sociology, and demography, including a doctorate in demography and sociology from Penn State University. She was the first woman to edit the journal Population Research and Policy Review, and she serves on the editorial boards of Organizational Research Methods and Social Currents. Dr. Bohon is a past-President of the Southern Demographic Association and President-Elect of the Southern Sociological Society.
