The partnership between West High School and CURENT took another step this week, as students and a teacher from the local school completed their spring research experience in the center.

Joe Foy, an upper-level math and AP physics teacher at West, worked with West students Hannah Simpson, Emmanuel Gyebison, and Demetrious Bovopoulos on solar & wind energy throughout the semester, and the group presented their final results and an overview to CURENT faculty, staff, and students yesterday afternoon. The students' families were also in attendance.

Mr. Foy, Gyebison, and Bovopoulos will be returning this summer for the 6-week research program, while Simpson is beginning her freshman year at the University of Tennessee in the fall.

“This experience gave me a better understanding of what to expect in college," said Simpson, who will enroll at UT as a Materials Science & Engineering major.

The group worked in CURENT and UT labs from January until May, and they took educational visits to Buffalo Mountain Wind Farm and Bull Run Fossil Plant, both run by Tennessee Valley Authority.

"The students got a lot out of their Young Scholars experience, and we're excited about the future of this partnership." CURENT-Logo_Transparent-tiny.png

The spring Young Scholars Program and Research Experience for Teachers was coordinated by Dr. Chien-fei Chen and Suzette Stiles from CURENT, and Mr. Joe Foy from West High School.
