OpenDSS Overview and Application

Date: Thursday, September 15, 2016

Time: 4:00pm – 5:00pm EST

Location: Room 124, Min H. Kao Building, Knoxville, TN

Title: OpenDSS Overview and Application

Presenter: Mr. Roger C. Dugan and Dr. Davis Montenegro from EPRI

Abstract: The OpenDSS is a comprehensive electrical power system simulation tool primarly for electric utility power distribution systems. It supports nearly all frequency domain (sinusoidal steady?state) analyses commonly performed on electric utility power distribution systems. In addition, it supports many new types of analyses that are designed to meet future needs related to smart grid, grid modernization, and renewable energy research. The OpenDSS tool has been used since 1997 in support of various research and consulting projects requiring distribution system analysis. Many of the features found in the program were originally intended to support the analysis of distributed generation interconnected to utility distribution systems and that continues to be a common use. Other features support analysis of such things as energy efficiency in power delivery and harmonic current flow. The OpenDSS is designed to be indefinitely expandable so that it can be easily modified to meet future needs.

During this seminar, Roger Dugan will provide background information about OpenDSS and Davis Montenegro will provide examples of the applications from his graduate work. Go to http://smartgrid.epri.com/SimulationTool.aspx for more information on OpenDSS.

This seminar is the kick-off of the UTK-EPRI Workshop series that is scheduled for October to cover OpenDSS functionality in more detail.

Bios: Mr. Roger C. Dugan, Life Fellow, IEEE, is a Sr. Technical Executive with EPRI in Knoxville, Tennessee USA. He has over 45 years of combined experience in distribution engineering with EPRI, Electrotek Concepts, and Cooper Power Systems. He holds the BSEE degree from Ohio University and the Master of Engineering in Electric Power Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. Roger has worked on many diverse aspects of power engineering over his career because of his interests in applying computer methods to power system simulation. Beginning with a student internship with Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Co, his work has been focused on Distribution Engineering. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions in harmonics and transients analysis. Recently, he has been very active in distributed generation, particularly as it applies to utility distribution systems and distribution system analysis. He was the 2005 recipient of the IEEE Excellence in Distribution Engineering Award. He is coauthor of Electrical Power Systems Quality published by McGraw-Hill, now in its 3rd edition. He serves on the IEEE PES Distribution System Analysis Subcommittee and is active in the Distribution Test Feeders WG.

Dr. Davis Montenegro is Engineer Scientist II for EPRI in Knoxville, TN. He received his degree in electronic engineering from the Universidad Santo Tomás, Bogotá, Colombia, in 2004, and the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, in 2012. He received Ph.D.degrees from the Universidad de los Andes and the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, France in 2015. He is a Specialist in automation of industrial processes in 2006.
