Title: Energy Insecurity during Extreme Events: Concepts, Methods, and Challenges from the Perspectives of Micro and Macro Levels
Abstract: This talk will present the multidimensional factors of social vulnerability, household characteristics and heath influencing energy burdens and utility hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic. Combining seven national representative data sets in one study, Dr. Chen will first present her recent findings on the disparities and impacts of socio-demographics, health, public assistance programs, health interventions, etc. on energy burdens and COVID-19 mortality of the medium and low-income households in the U.S. Second, she will present the results of the micro-levels of energy inequality issues in the UK and U.S. by exploring households’ energy burdens, utility hardships and social-psychological stress across different income groups. Finally, Dr. Chen will address the challenges of using the big or small survey data integration and interdisciplinary research to promote energy justice.
