Title: From AlphaGo to Power System AI – Achieving 100x Acceleration for Security Screening with Uncertain Scenarios Using Deep CNN

Abstract: In this presentation, a brief review of the AlphaGo algorithm and the similarity between AlphaGo and potential power system applications will be discussed. Next, an algorithm using deep convolutional neural networks for multi-scenario security screening will be presented using techniques similar to image-processing, because the power system characteristics are mapped to a typical image processing model. Case study results show that the security screening will be tremendously expedited while high accuracy will be retained.

Bio: Professor Fran Li received the B.S.E.E. and M.S.E.E. degrees from Southeast University, Nanjing, China, in 1994 and 1997, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA, in 2001. Currently, he is a James McConnell Professor with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, USA. His research interests include renewable energy integration, demand response, power markets, power system control, and power system computing. He is a registered Professional Engineering in North Carolina and a Fellow of IEEE.
