When: Friday, March 27, 2020 from 12:20pm to 1:10pm

Where: Online on Zoom

Presenter: Dr. Betsy Chesnutt, University of Tennessee

Title: Microaggressions: What are they and how should we respond?

Abstract: Microagressions are the everyday slights, indignities, put downs, and insults that people of color, women, LGBT populations or any group of people who are marginalized experience in their day-to-day interactions with others. They happen casually and often without any harm intended, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t cause harm. In this seminar, we will discuss examples of microaggressions and think about ways that we can respond if and when we hear them directed toward ourselves or other people.

Bio: Dr. Betsy Chesnutt has a B.S. in biological engineering from Mississippi State University, a M.S. in biomedical engineering from the University of Virginia, and Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the University of Memphis. She taught engineering physics and mechanics for 11 years at Itawamba Community College in Fulton, MS and is currently a Lecturer in the Engineering Fundamentals Program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
