Title: Comparison of 60V GaN and Si Devices for Class D Audio Applications

Abstract: The inherent performance benefits of using GaN over silicon in power electronics switching circuits (with respect to faster switching speeds, higher power density, and higher power efficiency) have been well documented; yet, little is shown to support the sonic advantages or disadvantages of using GaN in Class D audio.The presented work examines the application of GaN within Class D audio by providing a side-by-side comparison of enhancement-mode GaN devices with currently available silicon MOSFETs with 60V drain-to-source voltage ratings. GaN in Class D audio will allow for lower heat radiation, smaller circuit footprints, and longer battery life as compared to Si MOSFETs with a negligible trade-off for quality of sound.

Bio: Jordan Sangid is a Graduate Research Assistant within the Integrated Circuits and Systems Laboratory group and a Ph.D. student under Prof. Benjamin J. Blalock at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Jordan previously received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee. Additionally, he has a B.A. in History from the University of Tennessee. His research interests include Audio Electronics and Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Applications.

Title: Bilevel Arbitrage Potential Evaluation for Grid-Scale Energy Storage Considering Wind Power and LMP Smoothing Effect

Abstract: This work is about understanding and solving the extended-term energy storage (ES) arbitrage problems to maximize the annual revenue in deregulated power systems with high-penetration wind power. The conventional ES arbitrage model takes the locational marginal prices (LMP) as an input and is unable to account for the impacts of ES operations on system LMPs. We proposes a bilevel ES arbitrage model, where the upper level maximizes the ES arbitrage revenue and the lower level simulates the market clearing process considering wind power and ES. The results from the conventional model and the bilevel model are compared under different ES power and energy ratings, and also various load and wind penetration levels.

Bio: Hantao Cui received his B.S. and M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Southeast University in China in 2011 and 2013, respectively. He is presently a Research Associate and Ph.D. student at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee.  He is the technical lead of the CURENT LTB and the main developer of Andes.
