Ahmet Oner from NEU, and Jeff Eker from Tediferous, LLC, Give the April 12th Power and Energy Seminar

Ahmet Oner from NEU and Jeff Eker from Tediferous, LLC will give the CURENT Power and Energy Seminar on Friday, April 12. This seminar may be viewed remotely through ZOOM (see info. toward bottom of email).

CURENT Power and Energy Seminar

Presenters: Ahmet Oner, NEU, and Jeff Eker, Tediferous, LLC

Location: Min H. Kao Building, Room 124

Presenter: Ahmet Oner

Title: Operating Power Grids During Natural Disasters

Abstract: Optimal dispatch and network reconfiguration have so far been used effectively to improve power grid reliability and economic operation. This work presents a linearized optimization formulation of best load shedding and topology control strategies under extreme events such as hurricanes. In addition, the algorithm analyzes voltage stability after each optimization cycle and iteratively tightens the constraints until a stable solution is found. The proposed method relies on the hurricane’s trajectory forecast and available fragility curves for civil engineering structures to predict those power grid facilities most likely to be damaged or taken out in the next monitoring period. The developed algorithm also considers the requirements of other interdependent networks such as mobile communication and emergency services to prioritize load shedding for associated load centers.

Bio: Ahmet Oner received his B.S. and M.S degrees in electrical and electronics engineering from Orta Dogu Teknik Universitesi, in 2013 and 2016, respectively. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree specializing in power system analysis and optimization at Northeastern University.

Presenter: Jeff Eker

Title: How To Become A Global Citizen

Abstract: How To Become A Global Citizen....Or anything else you want. Jeffrey Eker, start up founder and innovation technology director, has travelled to over two dozen countries discovering what it means to pursue a life that’s meaningful by design. Learn how all his pursuits led to the publication of his book “Living Globalized” and truly embraced the thought that it’s kind of fun to do the impossible.

Bio: Jeff graduated from the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering as an Electrical and Computer Engineering major and German Studies minor in 2016. He has traveled around the world in eight days, visited 24 countries outside of the US, and looks forward to visiting many more! Jeff is heavily involved with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), representing Young Professionals in the mid-Atlantic region of the US on the local and international level.  Jeff is a Technology Consultant and Innovation Portfolio Director.

Meeting people from around the world is always Jeff’s favorite part of travel, and who he is today has been shaped in a huge way by the opportunities he’s had to embrace local cultures. Jeff is the CEO and founder of Tediferous, LLC that created the CultureCloud® platform. The CultureCloud mobile app allows travel users to instantly connect based on similar interests and hosts a community mode for any organization or conference to form a digital social ecosystem for their members. Jeff and his team launched CultureCloud at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He now also champions a project in Pakistan to crowd source opportunities for enabling social mobility in refugee populations.

Having grown up in Philadelphia, Jeff currently resides in Atlanta, GA and has been privileged to attend, moderate panels, and speak at many conferences globally including his TEDx talk in Bandung, Indonesia.
