Title: Protection and Control Issues associated with Shunt Compensated Transmission Lines
Presenter: Dr. Pratap Mysore, Pratap Consulting services, LLC
Abstract: Shunt reactors are installed in Transmission System to maintain the system voltage within permissible limits during light load conditions. Their connection to the system may vary but, the line connected reactors provide more economical installation over connecting them in standard positions on buses. The presentation discusses switching issues associated with Shunt compensated lines (lines with shunt reactors on the lines) due to the presence of DC offsets in line currents. The presentation provides basic concepts that lead to delayed current zeros resulting in line breaker failures. Presentation covers various mitigation methods used in the industry to prevent breaker failures. It also discusses protection and controls used in fault clearing and restoration.
Bio: Pratap G. Mysore, Founder of Pratap Consulting Services, has over forty years of experience in the power industry. He is a registered Professional engineer in the state of Minnesota.
He is actively involved in IEEE Power and Energy Society in the development of several IEEE standards and guides. He is the chair of IEEE Power Systems Relaying and Control Committee and a member of IEEE T&D Capacitor Subcommittee.
He has taught power systems protection course and several short courses at the University of Minnesota and developed media modules for the Consortium of Universities for Sustainable Power (CUSP), a DOE sponsored program. He was also one of the instructors at the 2018 Georgia Tech Power system Relaying course at Georgia Tech.
He has authored several papers and presented tutorials at MIPSYCON and at Western Power, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech relay conferences. He is a member of the WPRC planning committee.
